It is a new housing for a young couple and children born in the suburbs of Saitama City.

By the reasons of 1. The owner needed a lot of storage space, 2. The site could not afford a garden, but the front road was a private road, 3. The area around the site was a mixed landscape with quiet residential area and fields and city scape, We proposed a modern version of a farmhouse in this case.

Since ancient times, farmhouses have been covered with a large thatched roof, giving the impression that they are closed to the outside, but when you enter the room, you can see through and it is very open. In addition, it is composed of an "Kura", a "house" divided into a living room and a dirt floor, and a "vacant lot" for performing various agricultural work and they are loosely connected by sliding doors and steps.

In this plan, we replaced the composition of “Kura” to a storage, "house" to a living and dining and "vacant lot" to a private road, due to create the "closed but expansive space" of a farmhouse.

As one of the ideas, the wall that separates the "Kura" and the "House" is made of a translucent polycarbonate plate. By seeing through the space on the "Kura" side, you can feel the space wide even in a compact house. In addition, there are steps from the dining room to the living room, and the dining room to the front road (private road), which expands a gradual connection from the indoor space to the outside.

The stairs connecting the 1st and 2nd floors are inserted on the "Kura" side. As a result, not only is the space where the "Kura" unilaterally stores the things in the "house", but the things in the "Kura" that you see in your daily up-and-down movements can trigger unexpected actions. We expect it to function as a work-in-progress.
